What is Low Blood Pressure?
Low blood pressure is also called as Hypotension. It is when your blood pressure (normal 120/80 mmHg) goes below 90/60 mmHg. Low Blood pressure is due to the low or decreased blood supply to your vital organs like the brain and heart. People with low blood pressure can be treated with simple home remedies. But if they show serious symptoms they must consult a doctor before taking any further steps.
What are the symptoms?
Low blood pressure can be normal in some people. They do not show any symptoms and get better in a short time which is not a major problem. But in some people due to health conditions, it might show some symptoms indicating they must consult a doctor. The symptoms include:
- Cold, clammy, pale skin
- Blurred vision
Home Remedies for improving your Blood Pressure
1. Salt intake
If you are suffering from low blood pressure, increasing your salt intake might help. Table salt provides the essential ions required by the body to balance the fluid level. If you are feeling dizzy, mix half a teaspoon of salt with one glass of water and drink it. You can also add adequate amounts of salt to your food. But too much sodium intake is also harmful. Keep the intake at moderate levels. To know the adequate amounts according to your condition you can consult a doctor.
Drinking coffee and tea can increase your heart rate and improve your blood pressure for a short period. This is because the caffeine present in them can provide instant energy and improve the circulation process.
3. Iron-rich foods
Low BP could be due to low haemoglobin or low red blood cells in your blood. So, you can eat foods rich in iron like spinach, beetroot, broccoli, pomegranate, guava, sprouts, peas, prunes, etc. This would improve your blood pressure. Less iron intake over a period can lead to anaemia. Anaemia also lowers blood pressure.
4. Dried fruits
Eating dried grapes, apricots, dates, prunes could help you improve your low blood pressure. Eating 3-4 almonds in the morning will help boost your energy and improve your blood pressure. You can also drink almond milk as it doesn’t contain cholesterol or saturated fats.
5. Fluid intake
Dehydration can cause low blood pressure. It decreases blood volume. So, drink plenty of water and fresh juices as frequently as possible and keep your body hydrated.
6. Alcohol consumption
Excessive alcohol intake can cause dehydration which can lower your blood pressure. It can make the condition worse in people with low blood pressure. So avoiding drinking excessive alcohol is recommended.
7. Diet intake
Instead of eating a large meal, you can take smaller meals frequently. Doing this prevents any sudden drop in blood pressure in the time between the consumption of long meals. This keeps the body loaded with the necessary nutrients from time to time. This can prevent the lowering of your blood pressure.
Tulsi leaves have high levels of potassium, magnesium and vitamin c. These help in regulating your blood pressure. Eating 3-4 per day can help you improve your blood pressure. Tulsi tea can also help you with this. It is also loaded with an antioxidant called Eugenol. This retains the blood pressure under control. It also lowers cholesterol levels.
All the remedies given above can help you improve your low blood pressure. But low BP could be a symptom of any underlying disease associated with your heart or any other vital organs. But if this occurs consistently, it can cause serious consequences, including kidney failure, shock, stroke and heart attack. So consulting a doctor would be always better.
